Not far from the famous "Hole in the Wall" at the southern tip of the Bighorn Mountains, is the expansive Big West Ranch. Located between the towns of Casper and Kaycee, this outstanding grass ranch will carry over 1,000 animal units on 92,200 total acres. Big West Ranch has several year-round and seasonal streams and creeks, numerous springs and natural flowing wells - providing excellent stock water. This authentic working ranch includes three houses, cookhouse/bunkhouse, modern shop, large barn, and several outbuildings along with three sets of working corrals. The diverse landscape of mountain foothills, grassy meadows, canyons, buttes and breaks provides ideal livestock protection and excellent wildlife habitat.
Location and Area: Big West Ranch is located 50 miles northwest of Casper and 50 miles southwest of Kaycee, with its entire boundary in Natrona County, Wyoming. Located north of the town of Powder River and US Highway 20-26 (Yellowstone Highway), access is by travelling north on County Road 106 (Notches Road) for approximately 15 miles until the road ends, marking the intersection with County Road 108 (Baker Cabin Road). At the intersection, turn right onto County Road 108 (Baker Cabin Road) and travel northeast for two miles which leads to the ranch's southern boundary. Ranch headquarters is located and additional eight miles along County Road 108. County Roads 106 and 108 are maintained by Natrona County.
The northwest part of Big West Ranch is located at the southern foothills of the Bighorn Mountains. From Big West Ranch, the Bighorn Mountains are accessed from the South Bighorn/Red Wall Back Country Byway, an unpaved scenic road with pioneer history and natural scenery. The byway traverses through the historic ghost town of Arminto and the Arminto Stock Trail/Buffalo Creek Road which is still used today for cattle drives. Known as Wyoming's adventure capital and situated along the North Platte River, Casper has a population of 50,000 and is the regional center for banking, commerce, education, entertainment and recreation. The town offers various forms of community entertainment including touring Broadway shows, the annual College National Finals Rodeo, and is home to the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra, five golf courses, museums and year-round events including rodeos, parades, marathons, music/art and food festivals and more.
School bus service is available for elementary, middle and high schools in Powder River and Casper - all located in the Natrona County School District. Casper Community College and an extension of the University of Wyoming are both located in Casper. Interstate highways, railroads, and an international airport allow for easy access to national and international markets. Scheduled air service is available at Casper/Natrona County International Airport with transportation through Mesa Airlines, SkyWest Airlines and Allegiant Air.
Located fifty miles northeast of Big West Ranch, the rural ranching and farming town of Kaycee is situated at the banks of the Powder River and is home to the infamous "Hole-in-the-Wall" a station along the Outlaw Trail where legendary outlaws, Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and the rest of the Wild Bunch gang hid out and planned their holdups. The community is rich in western heritage and offers annual rodeos, historic trail tours, BBQs, and has outstanding hunting and fishing opportunities in surrounding parks and national forests.
Property Description: Big West Ranch is situated in one contiguous block, 20 miles east-to-west and 10 miles north-to-south at the southern tip of the Bighorn Mountains. The ranch has a variety of topography from mountain foothills and grass covered plateaus to canyons, buttes and breaks - providing year-round grazing and outstanding natural protection. Cottonwood Creek, Three Buttes Creek, and Indian Creek provide intermittent water flow. Several natural flowing springs, strategic wells, BLM reservoirs and the ranch's own seasonal 20-acre Lester Lake provide additional water resources throughout the ranch. Big West Ranch is a very efficient operating ranch due to the grazing allotment having no on/off dates, allowing cattle movement and pasture rotation year-round at the owner's discretion. Costs associated with the grazing allotment and leases are approximately thirty thousand dollars per year. Big West Ranch acreage breakdown is as follows:

Ranch Improvements: Big West Ranch is fenced and cross fenced into eighteen pastures with 10 miles of new fence in 4-5 strand barb wire. The remaining fence is a combination of woven wire plus 1-2 strands of barbed wire which can hold a variety of livestock securely. There are three sets of working corrals. The main corral, located at ranch headquarters, is constructed out of steel and wood with the capacity for 1,000 pair and is equipped with several new automatic waterers. Also located at ranch headquarters is a loading chute, a 20x24 scale house, three year-round natural flowing wells, and 4,000 feet of new underground pipeline for stock tanks and hydrants.
Main House: A three bedroom, two bath ranch style home with approximately 2,000 square feet, with new roof, kitchen, dining, great room/living room, moss-rock fireplace with insert, electric baseboard heat along with new plumbing and appliances.
House Two: A 1,000 square foot single level home with two bedrooms and one bath and a greatroom/kitchen with new appliances and baseboard electric heat. The pantry and laundry room are located in a 16x16 addition.
House Three: A 23x40 double-wide home with two bedrooms, two baths, kitchen/dining, living room, and wood stove.
Cookhouse/Bunkhouse: A 21x64 concrete block building. The front half serves as a kitchen with a long counter, walk-in cooler and large dining area and the back is an open bunkroom.
Shop: A 32x32 concrete block building with 12.6 sidewalls, two oversized roll-down doors, electricity, water hydrant, and a concrete floor with a hoist.
Barn: A 60x100 wood structure with steel siding, asphalt roof with tack room, built-in stalls, electricity and water, and a large storage area with concrete floor.
Equipment Storage: A 22x50 steel building with half of the floor in concrete, roll-up and swinging doors.
Salt Shed/Feed Storage: A 16x18 steel salt shed/feed room with loading dock.
Cabins: There are three older cabins located at ranch headquarters near the main corral which could be restored.
Recreation & Wildlife: Big West Ranch is a spectacular working ranch in scenic, wild and productive country. With 360 degree panoramic views, the expansive property has outstanding natural beauty, ideal location, and western heritage in an area rich in wildlife including elk, mule deer, antelope, and bob cats along with a variety of birds including sage grouse, chukar, dove, pheasants and many raptor species.
Located in north-central Wyoming near the Bighorn Mountains, a sister range of the Rocky Mountains with two peaks rising over 13,000 feet and over a dozen more over 12,000 feet, Big West Ranch is in a unique location for a large income-generating and investment property. Local History: The late 1800s and early 1900s marked a significant era in Wyomings past - rich in western history which captivates the imagination and romances individuals today to visit or relocate. During these pioneer days, the Pony Express, Oregon, Overland, Mormon, and California Trails passed through the territory in or around Big West Ranch. It was a vibrant time when cattle rustlers, horse thieves, and train robbers escaped posses and planned their holdups in various hideouts along the trails.
Big West Ranch lies close to the legendary Hole-in-the-Wall within the fertile valley of the Big Horns where legendary outlaws Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, Black Jack Ketchum and Kid Curry and the rest of the Wild Bunch planned their heists. The area was remote, secluded and easy to defend because of the narrow passes and rugged terrain which made it difficult for lawmen to approach without alerting the outlaws.
Abundant teepee rings, fossils and old homesteader cabins still exist on the ranch and provide a glimpse into its historic legacy. Big West Ranch and the surrounding country looks today as it did back then - well protected and abundant in natural resources with the same western appeal and majestic beauty.
