Description of the Land
The Barney Ranches were built on the desire of the Barney family to create an outstanding ranching operation. Starting with the purchase of the base unit and accumulating additional property and grazing rights over time, their objective has be met. They’ve created a ranch which is an example of a fine working cattle operation, focused on economics and return. The ranch has just over 10,000 deeded acres, with over 5,680 acres of the land having water rights. There are several thousand acres in the accompanying leases and permits from the State of Wyoming, Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. This gives the ranch a carrying capacity of 2,000 animal units. It is well worth noting that this is a “Cowboy” horseback operation with cattle trailing being a part of the ranch operations. $22,500,000.

The Barney Ranches are positioned in northwest Wyoming in the Green River Basin. Big Piney is located in the western portion of the basin under the spectacular Wyoming Range. Traveling to Jackson, Wyoming’s premier recreational destination, is a scenic one and a half hours drive and only three hours on to Salt Lake City.

There are three sets of ranch improvements on the different units of the ranch. The Home/Muleshoe is located a short distance from Big Piney and the headquarters. A second unit, the Reardon, is located south and downriver from the headquarters. The third unit, the Chapel, is located upstream. Each unit is set on the Green River and has extensive water rights. Each has a full set of improvements as well, including homes and livestock working facilities.

From the well-maintained and productive hay lands on the lower portions, to the extensive grazing pastures to the high mountain lands on National Forest land, the ranch is well-balanced for a livestock operation. Ranching operations winter the cattle on the lower ranches, turn them out on the pastures in the spring, and end the season having trailed the main herd up to the National Forest.

There is much more to the Barney Ranch than just being an excellent cattle operation. The Barney Ranches have outstanding views of the mountains, with miles of the Green River and the North and South Piney Creeks. These provide the ranch with Blue Ribbon fishing as well. A recent study by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department states that “This section of river contains some of the highest trout densities measured in the region and represents an important recreational fishery”.

The ranch has over 10 miles of fishing along the river and creeks. Portions of the river are subject to a fishing access agreement with the State of Wyoming. This easement is restrictive and has not adversely effected the owner’s enjoyment of the river. There are also several spring fed fishing reservoirs located on the main ranch.

There is ample variety of wildlife present; waterfowl are found in great quantity, as are deer, antelope and moose. While tending cattle on the National Forest one will have the opportunity to enjoy its wildlife and all of the amenities it has to offer.

The ranch is the perfect fit for the horse lover. The ranch values the traditional ways of handling livestock, moving most of the cattle by trailing and riding herd to care for the cattle on the National Forest allotment. There is also an indoor riding arena at the main ranch.

The ranch itself is also a significant part of history. When the pioneers headed west they went along the Oregon Trail and later used the Lander Cutoff. The trail went right along where the main ranch road is now and there are several locations along the river where the necessary ferries took pioneers across the Green River. One part of the ranch still retains the name “Ferry Island”.
